Any person can be a skater: african, asian, european, mexican, female, male, elderly, youngsters, poor, rich, etc. Skateboarders are people who participate in a sport/art, not a fashion trend.

To find some skaters: grab a skateboarding magazine, or a skateboarding movie, or hell, even go to your local skatepark or skateshop. You will quickly gather how diverse this sub-culture is, and hopefully create your own opionion/definition of them.

They seem to think that every skater also wears tight pants, smokes, has weed on them at all times, and is also out to destroy everything they see. Although many people think this way, it's simply not true. A skater, like I said, is anyone who rides along on a piece of wood attached to wheels. They don't have to fit into any requirements to be a skater, they should just have fun when they do it. They don't have to only own band shirts, or have bangs hanging over one eye, or shop at hollister, or dye their hair black, blue and red, or mosh at every concert they go to, but by all means, they CAN. That's one of the many things that's so great about skating. There are a ton of reasons to skate. Oddly enough, none of them threaten the downfall of the economy. People don't skate so they can wear tight pants and Emerica shirts. They don't skate to do drugs. They don't skate for the attention. They don't skate so they can tag every inch of cement there is. They don't skate because they want to be stereotyped these things, either. (Oh, and if you do skate so you can get labeled or because you think you'll earn brownie points with your friends, PLEASE, for the sake of humanity, fall off a cliff.)

Way back when I was in middle school, I just began to learn to skateboard. I loved it because it was so fun, and was a much better hobby than starring at a computer screen all day (Needless to say, my former hobby). I wanted to go to the public school in my area, but my friend's mom told my parents that if I did, BECAUSE I SKATEBOARD, I would get in to the 'wrong crowd' and become a pot head, crap like that... people who stereotype skaters need to die. Skaters can be any member of society but are most commonly males from the ages of 12-24. A skater was once able to be easily identified by his or her shoes, but due to the recent poseurdom on skateboard fashion this is harder to do. (Unless the skater has noticeable toe rips or gashes in his shoes from skateboarding.) A skater is not to be confused with a poseur, which is someone who wears skateboarding clothes and tells grandiose tales of how he backside flipped a thirty set. Skaters are not allways good at landing ticks, but the enjoyment for the sport is what makes them skater. Allthough there is no dress code, tracksuits will lose you any status as a true skater. Skaters wear what they think looks cool, and it isn't unusual to see them wearing something completly abstract. Now the way I see it is like there are two different types of true Skater: 1) They wear baggy clothes and chains on their jeans, these are normally the street skaters. 2) They wear all the great skate makes such as Hawk, Element and such. Apart from being used for someone who skateboards. In Sydney, Australia it is also used to describe ICE (Crystal Meth, which resembles ice)addicts when high. Most are either classed as straight or shakey skaters, depending on how they act when high. Straight skaters are the more stable that get high and take a few days to come down. Shakey skaters are alot less stable, often getting high and crashing within an hour or even a few minutes. They then wander around in shock daze for weeks at a time randomly fighting people and other similar stuff.
